Abstract: As rodlike domains pinch off owing to Rayleigh instabilities, a finite-time singularity occurs as the interfacial curvature at the point of pinch-off becomes infinite. The dynamics controlling the interface become independent of initial conditions and, in some cases, the interface attains a universal shape1. Such behaviour occurs in the pinching of liquid jets and bridges2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and when pinching occurs by surface diffusion10, 11, 12. Here we examine an unexplored class of topological singularities where interface motion is controlled by the diffusion of mass through a bulk phase. We show theoretically that the dynamics are determined by a universal solution to the interface shape (which depends only on whether the high-diffusivity phase is the rod or the matrix) and materials parameters. We find good agreement between theory and experimental observations of pinching liquid rods in an Al–Cu alloy. The universal solution applies to any physical system in which interfacial motion is controlled by bulk diffusion, from the break-up of rodlike reinforcing phases in eutectic composites13, 14, 15, 16 to topological singularities that occur during coarsening of interconnected bicontinuous structures17, 18, 19, 20, thus enabling the rate of topological change to be determined in a broad variety of multiphase systems.

Quantum Criticality in an Ising Chain: Experimental Evidence for Emergent E8 SymmetryR. Coldea,1,* D. A. Tennant,2 E. M. Wheeler,1, E. Wawrzynska,3 D. Prabhakaran,1 M. Telling,4 K. Habicht,2 P. Smeibidl,2 K. Kiefer2
Quantum phase transitions take place between distinct phases of matter at zero temperature. Near the transition point, exotic quantum symmetries can emerge that govern the excitation spectrum of the system. A symmetry described by the E8 Lie group with a spectrum of eight particles was long predicted to appear near the critical point of an Ising chain. We realize this system experimentally by using strong transverse magnetic fields to tune the quasi–one-dimensional Ising ferromagnet CoNb2O6 (cobalt niobate) through its critical point. Spin excitations are observed to change character from pairs of kinks in the ordered phase to spin-flips in the paramagnetic phase. Just below the critical field, the spin dynamics shows a fine structure with two sharp modes at low energies, in a ratio that approaches the golden mean predicted for the first two meson particles of the E8 spectrum. Our results demonstrate the power of symmetry to describe complex quantum behaviors.

The Highlights are mostly English and Norwegian
Swedish lesson; not Grensen.
Here's an English translation of the lyrics:
Deep below the surface
Clear as crystal
The crew was tense
The sea was cold
He had his world
Like I had mine
So he has to go
Home for a while
Everything he had lived for was there
In his underwater world
Refrain.
Captain Nemo said "Okay"
"It's time to leave"
Then he smiled at me
Captain Nemo turned
Towards an unknown sea
I will stay here but
Nemo's going home
Then we suddenly saw the policemen's boat
An alien force that never gave up
"Wish I could stay here my friend"
"But I have to go"
"See you soon again"
He dived into a wave
It was the last thing I saw
Refrain.
Refrain.
Captain Nemo said "Okay"
"It's time to leave"
And he bid farewell to me
Captain Nemo turned
Towards an unknown sea
I will stay here but
Nemo's going home
Oh Nemo

Min Egen Stad
Några meter bort i mitt kvarter

Lycka
" Happiness " (Anni-Frid Lyngstad 1971)
Every night when everything is quiet
and the children at long last sleep
you will get to me.
And it attracts the moon
and now we have time
to love each other for a while.
Simply press
your hand, my very dear,
I call for the happiness,
to feel that I have you near.
This is what happiness is to me!
Lying so and listening
to the sounds only heard in the night
with your hand in mine
Yes, I mean this is happiness,
you have someone that you have to think
a great deal about who we are.
To really feel
a friend, it is a gift,
feel pulsar burn,
first to get love then sleep.
This is what happiness is to me!
To really feel
a friend, it is a gift,
feel pulsar burn,
first to get love then sleep.
This is what happiness is to me!
Bara lite regn
Som torkar i en vind
För vad som än händer
Och hur det än går
Säg att det är regn
Säg att det är regn
Jag förstår
Om du måste le
För alla andra vara stark
Trots att du förlorat allt
Och när känslorna vill fram
Säg att det är regn
Som faller på din kind
Bara lite regn
Som torkar i en vind
För vad som än händer
Och hur det än går
Säg att det är regn
Säg att det är regn
Jag förstår
En evighet kan gå förbi
Men här och nu finns bara vi
Säg att det är regn
Bara lite regn
Som faller på din kind
För vad som än händer
Och hur det än går
Säg att det är regn

bifångst
Bifångst means bycatch. Please, don't ask why I need to know this word.
The picture is from the Science article referenced below.
I think it is crazy to let China's greed for natural resources be used as an excuse to destroy the ancient Mes Aynak Temple. Mes Aynak is a hill topped by a 4500-square-meter monastery. People die and the newspapers only publish propoganda, but it will remain in the scientific journals for ages. It is like selling Falun. Thank God the copper has run out there.
"There is a temple, stupas, beautiful rooms, big and small statues, two with the length of seven and nine meters, colourful frescos ornamented with gold and some coins," said Mohammad Nader Rasouli, head of the Afghan Archaeological Department.
"Some of the relics date back to the fifth century (AD). We have come across signs that there are items maybe going back to the era before Christ or prehistory," he said.
"We need foreign assistance to preserve these and their expertise to help us with further excavations."
Posted on Sunday, March 8, 2009: JALREZ VALLEY, Afghanistan — In this Taliban stronghold in the mountains south of Kabul, the U.S. Army is providing the security that will enable China to exploit one of the world's largest unexploited deposits of copper, earn tens of billions of dollars and feed its voracious appetite for raw materials.
U.S. troops set up bases last month along a dirt track that a Chinese firm is paving as part of a $3 billion project to gain access to the Aynak copper reserves. Some troops made camp outside a compound built for the Chinese road crews, who are about to return from winter break. American forces also have expanded their presence in neighboring Logar province, where the Aynak deposit is.
There may be some cause for concern.
A January 2008 report by Integrity Watch Afghanistan, a European research group, said that MCC extracted more copper than expected from a mine in Sandaik, Pakistan, but that the project has "had virtually no spillover effect on the local economy to date."
The report also warned of the potential for an "environmental and social disaster" if Aynak isn't properly managed, noting that the area is home to some 90,000 people and a source of Kabul's water supply.

Copper Mine Threatens Ancient Monastery in Afghanistan
Andrew Lawler
A decade after the Taliban destroyed the famous Bamiyan Buddhas—two massive statues that have stood sentry in an Afghan valley for 1500 years—archaeologists are warning that Afghan antiquities are again at risk. This time the threat comes from a venture blessed by the Western-backed Afghan government. A Chinese company intends to blow up an ancient Buddhist monastery south of Kabul to make way for a massive copper mine. The plan has sparked outrage among Afghan and French archaeologists, who have recently uncovered more than 100 statues within a large religious complex that includes seven stupas, or tombs built to house the relics of saints.

Top of pageAbstractThe reliable detection of single quantum particles has revolutionized the field of quantum optics and quantum information processing. For several years, researchers have aspired to extend such detection possibilities to larger-scale, strongly correlated quantum systems1, 2 in order to record in situ images of a quantum fluid in which each underlying quantum particle is detected. Here we report fluorescence imaging of strongly interacting bosonic Mott insulators in an optical lattice with single-atom and single-site resolution. From our images, we fully reconstruct the atom distribution on the lattice and identify individual excitations with high fidelity. A comparison of the radial density and variance distributions with theory provides a precise in situ temperature and entropy measurement from single images. We observe Mott-insulating plateaus with near-zero entropy and clearly resolve the high-entropy rings separating them, even though their width is of the order of just a single lattice site. Furthermore, we show how a Mott insulator melts with increasing temperature, owing to a proliferation of local defects. The ability to resolve individual lattice sites directly opens up new avenues for the manipulation, analysis and applications of strongly interacting quantum gases on a lattice. For example, one could introduce local perturbations or access regions of high entropy, a crucial requirement for the implementation of novel cooling schemes3.

Esmeraldas bön
The Swedish version is the one that touches me. Why? Who knows! I hoped for a version by Sissel but did not find any. I feel the compassion in the Swedish version. I studied French, but it always feels like a foreign and strange language to me.

The Pop Version

Choeur :
Je veux de l'Or.
Je veux la gloire.
je veux qu'on honore
Un jour ma mémoire.
Fais que l'on m'aime,
Dieu l'Immortel.

Choeur :
Je veux de l'Or.
Je veux la gloire.
je veux qu'on honore
Un jour ma mémoire.
Fais que l'on m'aime,
Dieu l'Immortel.
Nous implorons Ta Grâce,
O Grand Éternel.
Esméralda :
Je ne désire rien,
Ni gloire ni bien.
Mais le coeur qui a faim,
Doit mendier son pain.

Something other than graphene
I thought I should mention something other than graphene, although, of course, I am not really interested. This Cornell experiment was conducted at an extremely cold temperature - about 4 degrees Kelvin (-452 Fahrenheit). Too cold for me to think of as practical. The is supposedly the best known example of a simultaneously ferroelectric, ferromagnetic by a factor of 1,000. The research is described in Nature, Aug. 19, 2010.

Excitrons and Photovoltaics.
Hot excitons are created by the absorption of energetic blue or near-ultraviolet photons. Hot excitons quickly lose their excess kinetic energy through electron-phonon interactions and convert it into heat, which accounts for significant loss of conversion efficiency in photovoltaics. To increase efficiency, one needs to make use of this excess heat preferably by direct conversion to electricity (simlar to what is done in spaceceaft) and/or by going to a lower energy regime, i.e., using the visible portion of the spectrum and lower to generate cooler, multiple excitrons via quantum dots. These excitrons decay within 20-100 picoseconds making harvesting difficult. Ettori says photons are doves. Electrons are motorcycles (since they are 2-dimensional). Protons are trucks and therefore neutrons must be too although they had not yet been discovered. So we want to convert doves to motocycles without the trucks stealing the energy. Right, Ettori? Maybe not, doves also convert to Majorana fermions, don't they, Ettori? Should I have said happy 104th on August 5 or are you really gone?

An Uplifting Swedish Lesson
(This just my translation to help me learn Swedish.)
--------------- Stad I Ljus - City of Light ---------------
My journey was towards the sun, far beyond any enclosed place,
Where everything is infinite, and all borders are forever wiped out.
I wanted to see the miracle, and hear word give rise to life,
To be borne of a strength, which only grows when I realize my motive.
Stad i ljus, i ett land utan namn,
The city of light, in a country without a name,
Give me life, where everything is born anew.
And so when everything is changed, when time no longer exits,
Then, I see us together through the journey's end,
Det enda som vi minns.
The only thing we remember.
Stad i ljus, i ett land utan namn,
The city of light, in a country without a name,
Give me life, where everything is born anew.
Stad i ljus, i ett land utan namn,
The city of light, in a country without a name,
Give, give me life, where everything is born anew.

Abstract
Macrophages play an essential role in the resolution of tissue damage through removal of necrotic cells, thus paving the way for tissue regeneration. Macrophages also directly support the formation of new tissue to replace the injury, through their acquisition of an anti-inflammatory, or M2, phenotype, characterized by a gene expression program that includes IL-10, the IL-13 receptor, and arginase 1. We report that deletion of two CREB-binding sites from the Cebpb promoter abrogates Cebpb induction upon macrophage activation. This blocks the downstream induction of M2-specific Msr1, Il10, II13ra, and Arg-1 genes, whereas the inflammatory (M1) genes Il1, Il6, Tnfa, and Il12 are not affected. Mice carrying the mutated Cebpb promoter (βΔCre) remove necrotic tissue from injured muscle, but exhibit severe defects in muscle fiber regeneration. Conditional deletion of the Cebpb gene in muscle cells does not affect regeneration, showing that the C/EBPβ cascade leading to muscle repair is muscle-extrinsic. While βΔCre macrophages efficiently infiltrate injured muscle they fail to upregulate Cebpb, leading to decreased Arg-1 expression. CREB-mediated induction of Cebpb expression is therefore required in infiltrating macrophages for upregulation of M2-specific genes and muscle regeneration, providing a direct genetic link between these two processes.

Cure for Dairy Allergies
Milk Allergy Treatments.
The following is an article on the American Institute of Physics website at the above URL.
Milk Drops Cure Milk Allergies
You've heard it as lactose intolerant. But did you know milk allergy is the most common food allergy in the United States, affecting 6,000,000 infants and children? Now, a new way to treat dairy allergies is giving kids hope.
He could be the next Lebron James, but Jake's mom worries that the foods that his body rejects are the same ones that will make him grow up big and strong.
“At six months old he was skin tested. He was very allergic to dairy," Jake's mother Jessica Meyrowitz told Ivanhoe.
At first, Jake reacted to just 10 milligrams of milk -- about the amount of a grain of sand. Now, two new studies by pediatric allergists show that giving children small amounts of milk protein over time can help some kids overcome their milk allergy.
“When we got the phone call asking us to be a part of the study, it was such an incredible moment to be given the gift of hope,” Jessica recalled.
"We think this would be one of the really life changing treatments we've seen in the field of allergy," Robert Wood, M.D., a pediatric allergist, at Johns Hopkins Children's Center, in Baltimore, said.
In one study, called SLIT, or sublingual immune therapy, a few drops of a liquid extract of milk protein are held under the tongue for two minutes, then swallowed. In another study, called Oral Immunotherapy, children eat a milk powder protein combined with another food. Both studies increase doses of milk protein until the immune system learns to tolerate the milk without triggering an allergic reaction.
"The possible advantage of the SLIT is that you use much lower doses with the SLIT than with the oral immunotherapy," Dr. Wood explained. "This is the first study to ever compare the two in a head to head kind of fashion.”
Children who ate a milk protein powder could drink seven times more milk without an allergic reaction. Ninety percent of kids treated with liquid milk drops under the tongue drank milk with little or no reaction. Jake has made a huge improvement.
"Now he can take two ounces which is unbelievable, quite a gift," Jessica said.
It's a gift that's sure to do the body good.
Researchers caution that both therapies can lead to violent allergic reactions in some patients, and are still in the early phases of research.

Abstract DNA cytosine methylation is a central epigenetic modification that has essential roles in cellular processes including genome regulation, development and disease. Here we present the first genome-wide, single-base-resolution maps of methylated cytosines in a mammalian genome, from both human embryonic stem cells and fetal fibroblasts, along with comparative analysis of messenger RNA and small RNA components of the transcriptome, several histone modifications, and sites of DNA–protein interaction for several key regulatory factors. Widespread differences were identified in the composition and patterning of cytosine methylation between the two genomes. Nearly one-quarter of all methylation identified in embryonic stem cells was in a non-CG context, suggesting that embryonic stem cells may use different methylation mechanisms to affect gene regulation. Methylation in non-CG contexts showed enrichment in gene bodies and depletion in protein binding sites and enhancers. Non-CG methylation disappeared upon induced differentiation of the embryonic stem cells, and was restored in induced pluripotent stem cells. We identified hundreds of differentially methylated regions proximal to genes involved in pluripotency and differentiation, and widespread reduced methylation levels in fibroblasts associated with lower transcriptional activity. These reference epigenomes provide a foundation for future studies exploring this key epigenetic modification in human disease and development.

My Old Laptop
I just upgraded the components in my old laptop. It has no MXM slot, so there is nothing I can do about the poor graphics without the proper tools to replace the graphics processor. I replaced the heat pad on the graphics processor with a copper bridge to transfer heat through both heat sinks connected to the cooling fan. I used Masscool G751 thermal grease. I watched all videos on YouTube showing how to take the computer apart and put it back together. I thought the French technicians approach of simply putting each screw back were it came from, seemed less stressful to me. So, that is what I did.
