The best way to learn about graphene is to watch all the KITP Podcasts and see which ones mention graphene. The videos embedded here have no scientific or mathematical content.

The Royal Wedding

I hope the wedding this Saturday is even happier than the royal wedding last Saturday. I like the parade with all the horses, but the girls cry when Daren sings. The festivities began on Friday. Rainy as usual...

Kaiserslautern

Kaiserslautern is often call K-Town because many inhabitants cannot pronounce German. It is close enough to France so they like to cut your tie in two on a certain day of the year. Many of the blondes, maybe brunettes dye their bright red. They have a soccer team. They sing "you'll never walk alone". They work hard on suicide prevention, but it does not seem to work. Secretary Gates and Zack happen to be visiting the place; not together, but each in his own way. I guess they have friends there. People eat at MacDonalds. It did not make my list of the world's happiest places. I would never search for a video about the place. I seems like a funny place to go on vacation, but people do. It seems funny to me.

Mohaḥ

Mohaḥ in saṃskṛtā vāk is translated illusion in English, Swedish, etc. Saṃskṛtā vāk was not thought of as a specific language set apart from other languages, but rather as a particularly refined or perfected manner of speaking.

But, I am trying to learn a real language namely, Swedish. Here is phase for today:

tränga mig före i kön

Since I speak English, it reminds me of:
Train me* (be)fore i(n) queue

*Swedish verbs are still reflexive for the most part.

Dubious derivations:
The original root of “train” comes from is the same root as trick. It meant to betray and thus the word has the connotation of being bad. Further back, before the Romans, it came from “ter” meaning to turn

The actual meaning:
“To push forward through a line of waiting people.” (This is modern American English. Other English speakers, of course, use queue as verb and a noun now.)

All language is basically the same, except for mathematics. Thank God for it.
(I think it is funny, even if nobody else does.)

Satire from the Norwegian program uti vår hage.

Uti vår hage is a traditional Swedish song. Who can figure? Norwegian is sort of like Danish spoken in Swedish. So, a Norwegian can easily understand spoken Swedish, but often they don't really know what it means. On the other hand, they don't understand spoken Danish very well, but it trivial for them to read.

Prom 2010 - studentbalen i Falun

I sjönöd!

Kul. Lika bra man bloggar lite under tiden.

The Disorganized Personality

Is this what happens when don't eat balanced meals? Just joking.

My Swedish lesson for today is how to deal with crazy people. When dealing with people that are actually crazy, you use the euphemism, "disorganized personality" so as not to offend. They can be dangerous; you know.

In search of people who are happy and communicate...

Groups in our society are generally not supposed to talk to each other. Information Assurance (IA) people are only allowed to talk to IA people, etc. Employers require employees to sign secrecy agreements not to speak without special permissions. People are on guard that the people around them may be criminals trying to elicit information to harm them or others they care about. Public figures make their living stereotyping and pitting one group against in order to gain a following. Widespread drug like use of coffee, alcohol, etc. combined with illicit drugs and poor nutrition acts to prevent intelligent conversation or real happiness. It is socially acceptable way of disciplining children and subordinates not to allow them to speak. Different groups typically invent their own jargon and consequently cannot communicate with each other. Doctors are often only allowed to reveal the outcome of medical exams to the group paying for it and not to the patient. Human resources personnel investigating abuse of employees are only allowed to reveal the results of their investigation to the employer permitting the abuse and not to the person being abused. Learning mathematics and other languages is discouraged in schools and the public media. Use of language above the sixth grade level is practically nonexistent on TV and other public media. Why should any imtelligent person give credence to someone talking to them at that level? The only socially acceptable use of communication seems to be propaganda and trying to sell things. No wonder everyone is cutoff from most of the world and unhappy with others. Whatever happened to freedom of speech and the pursuit of happiness?

Gränna in popular culture

Tack för att dela foton av sjön Vättern, Gränna,... och du. Jag önskar att jag var ung igen.

When Niklas Strömstedt wrote lyrics in Swedish for the musical Mamma Mia!, Glasgow was replaced by "Gränna" as the place which the singer calls from in the lyrics of the song Super Trouper. Super Trouper is the basis for my Swedish lesson today.

Practical Optical Quantum Computers

An article in Nature explores the use of ELEDs in optical quantum computers.

An optical quantum computer, powerful enough to solve problems so far intractable using conventional digital logic, requires a large number of entangled photons1, 2. At present, entangled-light sources are optically driven with lasers3, 4, 5, 6, 7, which are impractical for quantum computing owing to the bulk and complexity of the optics required for large-scale applications. Parametric down-conversion is the most widely used source of entangled light, and has been used to implement non-destructive quantum logic gates8, 9. However, these sources are Poissonian4, 5 and probabilistically emit zero or multiple entangled photon pairs in most cycles, fundamentally limiting the success probability of quantum computational operations. These complications can be overcome by using an electrically driven on-demand source of entangled photon pairs10, but so far such a source has not been produced. Here we report the realization of an electrically driven source of entangled photon pairs, consisting of a quantum dot embedded in a semiconductor light-emitting diode (LED) structure. We show that the device emits entangled photon pairs under d.c. and a.c. injection, the latter achieving an entanglement fidelity of up to 0.82. Entangled light with such high fidelity is sufficient for application in quantum relays11, in core components of quantum computing such as teleportation12, 13, 14, and in entanglement swapping15, 16. The a.c. operation of the entangled-light-emitting diode (ELED) indicates its potential function as an on-demand source without the need for a complicated laser driving system; consequently, the ELED is at present the best source on which to base future scalable quantum information applications17.

Status --France Yesterday and Sweden Always

The end of the road leads somewhere!
Jack goes to the Yard Sale in 12 hours and Surfer's Church in 22.
Zack was actually in France yesterday, not Xaviar's backyard or South America. Haha.
I can guess where Zack and his two best friends will be heading.
Maria should be at Hönö by now. Linnea and the rest have reservations, too. I recognize about a dozen from their time in Hawaii, but everyone has probably forgotten me by now. At least I hope so. I like the "Maybe Attending" group and hope they make it for the weekend. Wonderful people and some might even remember me. I bet they have fun.
I don't know why everyone congratulates Sarah on her Mother's license. Someone will probably do it at Hönö, too. Emma and company made it back to Falun safely. Hooray! I am happy, too. PTL...

Abstract

Complementary electronic properties and a tendency to form sharp graphene−graphane interfaces open tantalizing possibilities for two-dimensional nanoelectronics. First-principles density functional and tight-binding calculations show that graphane can serve as natural host for graphene quantum dots, clusters of vacancies in the hydrogen sublattice. Their size n, shape, and stability are governed by the aromaticity and interfaces, resulting in formation energies 1/√n eV/atom and preference to hexagonal clusters congruent with lattice hexagons (i.e., with armchair edge). Clusters exhibit large gaps 15/√n eV with size dependence typical for confined Dirac fermions.
